The success of any senior-friendly change initiative or program rests largely on the education of a multi-disciplinary staff directed toward the needs of the geriatric population. Education programs can be created and implemented internally (specific to each hospital), as part of a larger CME program, or through participation in externally created programs.
Education needs should be assessed on an ongoing basis. As the program grows and the competency of staff changes over time, it is expected that educational needs will change. It is highly recommended that education be coordinated with peer review cases, based on cases experienced in the local ED.
In this section we explore topics in planning and implementing education programs surrounding geriatric care in the ED.
